Sixers trade junk for potential

Hey remember these guys?

The Sixers mad a splash today, (OK it was more of a sprinkle than a splash) shaking up the roster and finally sending away Willie Green.

The  Sixers acquired rookie forward Craig Brackins from the New Orleans Hornets for Green and Jason Smith. The Sixers also got forward Darius Songaila in Thursday’s trade.

I have no idea what the Sixers are getting Brackins, but I love this trade regardless because at the very least the Sixers got rid of a couple guys who have no business logging heavy minutes in the NBA.

I have nothing against Willie Green, but when he is your answer to the shooting guard position your team has problems. Green was never a good shooter, and defenders didn’t fear his drive. His defense was OK, but not good enough to warrant keeping him on the floor for more than a few minutes.

Jason Smith is a reserve and likely will never be more than that. Losing him will not hurt the team in any way.

Songaila is a cool name to say, but his game offers little in terms of excitement. He is a decent reserve, averaging seven points in seven seasons. Every team needs depth and that’s what he provides.

The real head-scratcher in this deal is what the Hornets are thinking trading a young player for a couple of reserves. The team said it wants to do everything it can to keep Chris Paul around after this season, but this can’t make Paul too happy.

Brackins, who was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 21st overall pick and was then traded to New Orleans, averaged 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds last season for Iowa State. That sounds like potential to me.

Throw him in as another nice prospect on a young rebuilding team. As crazy as it sounds I think the Sixers actually have a clue right now.

Could we possibly have four franchises in this city that are looking good in either the present or future.?

Talk of the town 9/23

There has been no slowing the Phillies or Roy Oswalt lately. The Phillies completed a sweep of the Braves as they inch closer to another division title and the Braves inch closer to missing the playoffs. Also, one Flyers blogger is pumped for tonight’s preseason game against the Leafs (as am I) and a soccer fan takes an interesting view on how PPL Park, home of the Union, is the best stadium atmosphere in the city. It may sound extreme, but don’t judge it unless you have been there. It does get wild.

It’s all here in today’s edition of Talk of the town.

Oswalt comes up aces as Phils sweep Braves – nbcsports.com

“Roy Oswalt watched Philadelphia’s other two aces do their job, then he outdid them. Oswalt and a pair of relievers combined on a one-hitter and the NL East-leading Phillies beat Atlanta 1-0 Wednesday night for their 10th straight win, increasing their bulge over the Braves to six games.”

Brilliance by the numbers- Delawareonline.com

“First off, with a six-game lead and nine to play, the Phillies’ magic number to clinch the East is now four. What that means, more than anything, is the Phillies need to win four of their next six against the Mets and Nationals to ensure that Roy Oswalt, Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels can get a nice break heading into the postseason.”

For Eagles, Kolb soldiers on as backup- philly.com

“The NFL is a tough spot. You have to compete and you have to compete every day,” Kolb said, when asked if he thought it was fair, losing his job after playing one half of the opener against Green Bay and suffering a concussion. “I want to be out there. The hardest thing is, you want to go to battle with your guys. We spend a lot of time together, and I want to be out there fighting with them.”

Fanpost: The Union runied baseball for me- philadelphiauniontalk.com

“Continuing our accidental series on how every other stadium experience blows compared to li’l ol’ PPL, yet another fan writes to us concerning just how hard we U fans go.  We’re sure many of you are Phillies fans, and you’ll want to rebut, so feel free.”

Flyers Preseason Gameday: Leafs Part 1 – flyersgoalscoredby.com

“I don’t even care if its preseason, these games are almost as fun as when they count. Odd line combos, young guns giving it their all, weird eastern european goalies you’ll never hear from again, and fights. The sweet, glorious fights we all love in Philly are back. Tonight’s game in London, Ontario should offer plenty of fisticuffs.”

Talk of the town 9/22

Another big night in Philly leads to another busy day of sports talk. We have Michael Vick replacing Kevin Kolb as the Eagles starting quarterback for now and possibly the future. Also, Roy Halladay wins 20 games as the Phillies improve to 30-games over .500.

Oh, and hockey is back — well, preseason anyway. It’s all here in Talk of the town.

Didinger: Reid deals Kolb toughest hit of all — csnphilly.com

“Kevin Kolb took a hard hit from Clay Matthews, but it was nothing compared to the hit he took from his coach on Tuesday. Andy Reid blindsided his young quarterback with a shot that sent shockwaves rippling from here to Stephenville, Tex. One day after he assured everyone that Kolb would be the Eagles’ starting quarterback Sunday in Jacksonville, Reid changed direction and announced that Mike Vick would get the ball instead. It was one of the more bizarre audibles in NFL history. Reid tried to explain it, but left most people scratching their heads.”

Rich Hoffman: Move to Vick puts Reid on hot seat — philly.com

“If the Eagles do not make a run in the playoffs this season, Andy Reid is on the clock in 2011. He has to be, after this. What once was an intricately planned debut season for Kevin Kolb is now, apparently, a win-at-all-costs race to the finish with Michael Vick. Reid is coaching like a man in a hurry. From here on, he should be viewed as such.”

Life on Mars — Igglesblog

My Reaction. I don’t like the move. There are a number of reasons for this. Here are 3 factors that are the focus of my opinion:
1. After 2 games, I don’t think the 2010 Eagles look like a Super Bowl team.
2. Kevin Kolb is (was?) the future of the franchise at QB. He is a mystery and will be until he plays.
3. Vick is the better player now, but I don’t trust him long term so no matter what he does this year I will never truly be comfortable with him as “the guy”.”

Richards’ SO goal lifts Flyers over Devils — flyers.nhl.com

“Mike Richards scored a shootout goal in the fourth round, lifting the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-3 win over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night in the first preseason game for both teams.”

Is Hamels a top-3 Cy Young candidate — Phillies Nation

“Here are some stats for you to chew on:

-Cole Hamels is 12-10 this season, with a 2.93 ERA, a new low. He ranks 11th in the NL in ERA, 9th in WHIP, 3rd in strikeouts, 6th in K/9, and 13th in BAA, and 8th in innings pitched.”

Halladay wins 20, recalling Carlton in ‘82 — nytimes

“Halladay beat the Atlanta Braves, 5-3, to put the Phillies five games ahead in the National League East. He worked seven innings, allowing three runs, improving to 20-10 with a 2.53 earned run average. He will probably win the Cy Young award, as Carlton did in 1982, but mainly because of his E.R.A., innings and strikeouts.”

Michael Vick to start Sunday

Fans who wanted to see more of Michael Vick will get their wish.

Andy Reid said Vick will be the team’s starting quarterback for this week’s game against Jacksonville and beyond.  As it turns out the decision has nothing to do with Kolb’s concussion and everything to do with Vick’s play.

“Kevin is fine. It’s not an injury-related issue,” Reid said during his press conference. “It’s not about judging him. He’s going to be a championship-caliber quarterback.”

Reid’s decision comes as a surprise since he came out yesterday and named Kolb the starter for Sunday.

Vick is coming of consecutive strong performances, passing for 284 yards passing and two TDs in a 35-32 win at Detroit on Sunday and throwing for 175 yards and one touchdown and ran for 103 yards in the opener.

Reid said Vick is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the league and there was no way he could sit him (of coarse that is a complete 180 of yesterday’s statement that Kolb was the guy going forwards.

The most rediculous part of the conference was that Reid said he did not think this move would hurt Kolb and insisted that it would help Kolb in the future. Remind me again the last time a QB got better for benched?

This move is already drawing praise from some and scorn from others. Check back to phillysportsblogs tomorrow for complete reaction on today’s big news.

Talk of the town 9/21

The Phillies scored a big victory over the Braves last night thanks to another big performance from Cole Hamels. Also another idiot jumped on the field, but he was no match for mat Diaz’s foot. while football and baseball are taking up all the headlines, hockey and basketball is working its way to the preseason. It’s all here in today’s edition of Talk of the town.

Eagles Rewaind: offensive line needs work – philly.com

“When a team gives up six sacks and numerous quarterback pressures, there is room for variety. So it went for the Eagles Sunday, when they had protection issues that could be attributed to individual miscues, play selection and even just poor fundamentals (a sack on a fumbled snap).

Utley flashes some leather against the Braves- cnsphilly.com

“It was a double play started by Utley with one out in the sixth inning on a sharp grounder hit by Martin Prado that proved to be the Braves’ final stand in Monday’s huge showdown at the Bank. After that play Atlanta had just one base runner over the final three innings as the Phils rolled to a 3-1 victory to extend their lead over the Braves in the NL East to four games.”

Matt Diaz’s trip helps Phillies security capture fan on field-fanhouse.com

“The Taser has been replaced at Citizens Bank Park by Matt Diaz’s right leg. A rogue (and rouge) fan — dressed in a one-piece, faceless, all-red costume — ran on the field in Monday’s seventh inning. And he eluded security guards until Diaz, the Braves’  left fielder, tripped him.”

Micahel Leighton’s new mask- twitpic.com

Not much to say other than it’s awesome.

Hartnell hoping for a smoother season- nhl.com

“After reaching career highs of 30 goals, 30 assists and 60 points in 2008-09, Hartnell suffered through a difficult 2009-10 season, scoring just 14 goals. He had three goal droughts of at least 12 games, including a 17-game run from Dec. 7 to Jan. 7, and a 21-game skid from March 20 that carried to Game 3 of the second round of the playoffs.”

A Sixers package for Melo-depressedfan.com

“Setting aside, for a moment, Carmelo Anthony’s tacit veto power over any trade made before February, can the Sixers put together a decent package for him? Let’s take a look after the jump.”

Like late home run, Werth is a goner

If you are a fan of Jayson Werth, Sunday was a bad day for you.

You may be thinking “Wait, what? Didn’t Werth hit a walk-off home run that sent the Phillies to a dramatic 7-6 win over the Nationals to keep the team’s lead over the Braves in the NL East at three games?”

He sure did. It was news that came after that homer that should give fans who like seeing Werth in a Phillies uniform a long pause. Werth went out and made a deal with the devil. In other words, he hired Scott Boras as his agent.

Boras, who justly or not, is  the symbol of everything that is wrong with financial aspect of baseball. He is also known as being the best at what he does, which is take teams behind his woodshed and beat them endlessly until every last penny falls out of their pockets.

When a player wants money, and a lot of it, they hire the services of Boras. I’m sure the second Werth’s bat made contact with that 9th inning home run Boras’ eyes lit up – with money signs. In Boars’ mind, each foot that ball traveled equaled another thousand dollars in his pocket.

I don’t blame Werth or Boras for the deal they made. Werth is a free agent who wants to and deserves to be paid. Boras is an agent who does his job better than anyone else in the field. In a way it’s a match made in heaven.

Just not for Phillies fans.

Fans began to accept the fate that Werth would not be around past this season when the Phillies sank money into extending Shane Victorino. The team now has over $150 millions sunk into just 16 players next season, so signing Werth, who will be looking for a contract of at least $150 million, just doesn’t seem plausible. Philly.com’s Matt Gelb, puts a positive spin on the situation, saying Boras this will ensure that Werth and the Phillies will go to arbitration. The Phillies will offer a deal, Boras will reject it, another team will sign him and since he will be a type-A free agent, the Phillies will get two draft picks as compensation.

You see even the positive side of the story ends with Werth leaving town.

As I stated earlier, realistic fans knew this would be Werth’s last season in Philly barring something unforeseen. This almost certainly would have been the case with or without Scott Boras.

But adding Boars to the story just makes the situation feel a lot worse.

The talk of the town 9/20

Yesterday was a big day in the Phillys Sports scene. The Eagles picked up their first win of the season and did so with the help of Michale Vick, who is heading right back to his role as back up and Jayson Werth hit a walk-off home run as the Phillies stayed three games up on the Braves. Speaking of the Braves, we take a dip into Atlanta’s blog scene to see how the Braves fans feel heading into a the big showdown.

Here is the talk of the town.

Kolb: I got to prove I’m the starter- philly.com

“Kevin Kolb is back and ready to return to his position as the Eagles starting quarterback. Of course, there are some that believe Kolb isn’t the man for that job after Michael Vick filled in for the last game and a half, and helped guide the Eagles to their first victory Sunday. Kolb said he’s fine with that thinking.”

Michale Vick sparkles again; Promply gets benched – Yahoo Sports

“It would’ve been difficult to imagine this back in 2007 when Michael Vick was being led around in handcuffs, but I’m about to argue that the man is being wronged. It’s not just Vick, either. It’s all of his teammates, fans and pretty much anyone who wants the Philadelphia Eagles to win football games. They’re all being done a disservice by Andy Reid’s decision to go with Kevin Kolb as the starter in next week’s game against the Jaguars. ”

Werth walks off for 7-6 win - Phillies Nation

“It was a frustrating first eight innings. Countless opportunities gone by the wayside and a Joe Blanton start turned ugly with one pitch. In the end, none of that mattered because a ninth inning rally gave the Phillies their seventh straight victory. Four runs in the final inning, capped by a Jayson Werth two-run, dead-center home run that gave the Phillies an epic comeback win over the Nationals.”

Spotlight is on Braves and Phillies to begin the week - Tamahawk Take

“This is it. When the schedules were announced prior to this season, many looked to this and the final series against the Phillies as possibly the deciding factors for both teams. They were right. The Braves travel to Philadelphia for a three-game series in what could determine the team’s divisional chances.”

Braves-Phillies series preview – Crashburn Ally

“Werth hit a walk-off two-run home run yesterday to keep the Braves at bay by three games, requiring them to sweep out the Phillies if they want to catch up any time soon. Even if they win the series two-to-one, they will still be behind two games. The Phillies, on a seven-game winning streak, have been taking care of business but so too have the Braves, winners of six of their last nine games.”

Vick now the man for the Eagles – for a week at least

What should we expect from Michael Vick?

This has been a question asked by Eagles fans since Michael Vick was first acquired by the team last preseason. The question has had different values of significance placed during that time. Last year, fans wondered if Vick would, or should even see the field at all. With Donovan McNabb set as the starter and Kevin Kolb as the backup, fans didn’t have to expect much from Vick.

Now with McNabb in Washington and Kolb trying to get the cobwebs out of his head, it is Vick who will take the field for the first time as the starting quarterback since 2006.

Just like his place in the QB pecking order, the expectations have now been raised for Vick — largely due to his 18-for-24 175 yards passing, 103 yards rushing performance in a half of football against the Packers.

Many fans were quick to dismiss Vick’s performance, pointing to the notion that the Packers had not game planed for Vick and if they had the results would not have been close to the same.

That could be true. However assuming that is a slight to Vick, who does have three Pro Bowl appearances to his credit. Dog fighting ring aside, the man does know how to play the position, even if he does it unconventionally.

So what can be expected of Vick?

Personally I expect to see Vick perform well, if not eye-poping against the Lions. For all of the hype about   Detroit being a team on the rise the Lions are still a mess defensively — well outside of Big Ndamukong Suh. That man is simply a beast. The rest of the defense is bellow average and I think Vick will again be able to use both his arms and legs to move the chains.

My guess — 65 percent passing, 210 yards and another 75 on the ground in an Eagles win.

You don’t have to like or respect Vick, but as an Eagles fan who wants to see their team win, you do need to root for him — at least this week, because the ball will be in his hands.

The talk of the town 9/17

There is much buzz around the sports scene today as the Flyers get set to open up camp, the Phillies start a three-game series with the Nationals, and the Eagles prepare for the Lions. Oh, and we have a hilarious clip on the Mets that no Phillies fan can miss.

5 things to watch in Flyers’ camp – philly.com

“The Flyers signed veteran free agent Bill Guerin to a tryout contract on Monday but he is free to leave at any point during camp to sign with another team. Will Guerin, who turns 40 in November, carve out a spot for himself on the roster? His arrival could mean the waiving of Darroll Powe or Dan Carcillo. Plus, a contract would need to find under the salary cap. There are few downsides to a player fresh off a 45-point season with 426 career goals and 20 seasons worth of experience.”

Pannacilo: Flyers trainning camp preview– csnphilly.com
“This was the shortest summer the Flyers have experienced since 1997 when they lost to Detroit in the Stanley Cup Final. In late August, Kimmo Timonen admitted he was more mentally than physically “exhausted” from all the hockey with so short a recovery time.”

Eagles Special Teams coach bobby April talks coverage struggles– bleedinggreennation.com
“When the Eagles hired Bobby April from the Bills this offseason, we all expected to see an immediate improvement in the special teams. April’s special teams units in Buffalo have been consistently among the league’s best. After just one game though, the Eagles ST showed that April still has his work cut out for him.”

Vick prepared to start for Eagles– insdiertheiggles.com
“Regardless of how successful Vick is, the public sentiment from inside the Nova Care Center is that there is absolutely no controversy.  Eagles tight end Brent Celek drove home that point. “I know that sometimes people feel that what the media says is what we as players feel, but that’s not how it works.  If ESPN’s reporting that, hey, there’s a quarterback controversy, that’s not necessarily at all how the players feel,” Celek said.”

Why the 2010 playoffs will be awesome– philliesnation.com
“Coolstandings.com gives the Phillies a 96.5 percent chance of making the playoffs. The Phillies, with 15 games to go, are three games up on the division and 3 1/2 up in the Wild Card. I feel comfortable talking playoffs without fear of jinxng the works. And when I talk about them, I feel something I haven’t felt in a long time–genuine, unbridled excitement.”

And this video comes to use from youtube, and is a riot.

The talk of the town 9/16

Here at phillysportsblogs we take pride in our original content, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have appreciation for some of the other talented publications in the area. Today begins what will be a regular post on this site titled “The talk of the town”. It is a sampling of some of the better sports topics being discussed in Philadelphia.

Momentum keeps building as Phillies sweep Marlins – Phiting On

“Get out your broomsticks.  Tonight, Roy Halladay and the Phillies completed a three game sweep of the Florida Marlins, giving them their first sweep since the Padres series (Aug 27-29) but also giving them their 6th straight series win.  The Phillies dominated the series from the first game, outscoring the fish 23-10.  Even better news?  The Braves lost again to the Nationals putting them a full three games behind the Phillies for the NL East lead”

Road loss to San Jose- Phillyuniontalk.com

“A battle of the goalkeepers resulted in another painful away defeat for the Union.  Knighton, starting again in place of Seitz, came up huge to stop a number of blistering attempts by the Quakes, but his counterpart at the other end of the pitch did the same.  The difference between the two was an artful header by Chris Wondoloski, bonked in perfectly from an Arturo Alavez cross in the 69th.”

What will Birds do if Vick wins – philly.com

“It was as if he hit a replay button on the “Michael Vick Experience” – that roller-coaster ride of highlight films that once made Vick the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback. To be honest, it was a glimpse from the past many thought could not be seen again. Apparently, Vick, who missed two full seasons while in prison on charges related to his dogfighting operation, still might be able to play a little bit.”

Week Two Preview: Detroit Lions – birdsfan.com

“The Eagles take their battered squad on the road for the first time this week to take on the Detroit Lions. Both teams will be looking to pick up their first win, and if you go by the Dononvan McNabb rule book, one of them will get it. Today we look at some of the Lions team stats after the first week as well as looking at their impact players on both sides of the ball.”

Pronger on ice for first time since playoffs - csnphilly.com

“Chris Pronger, still rehabbing his right knee, stepped onto the ice at Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J., Wednesday for the first time since Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. “I didn’t fall, so I have to say it’s pretty good,” Pronger said after the short session, which lasted about 15 minutes. Pronger underwent arthroscopic surgery to his knee in late July.”

Could the Sixers land Carmelo Anthony?

How would Carmelo Anthony look in a Sixers uniform?

The Sixers acquiring Anthony sounds like a pipe dream to me and I’m sure Philadelphia fans feel the same way but at least one blogger is reporting that it could be a possibility.

Cbssports.com blogger Ken Berger wrote an article titled Nets, Sixers add intrigue to Melo Saga, which can be read here.

In the article Berger mentions the Sixers as being part of a three-team trade that would send Anthony to the Nets, but adds that the Sixers could also go after Anthony for themselves.

Bellow is his info:

With No. 3 overall pick Derrick Favors, multiple extra draft picks, and Devin Harris, whose $8.98 million contract could be parlayed into a serviceable replacement for Anthony in a three-team trade, New Jersey has the makings of a package that would appeal to Nuggets officials, one of the people with knowledge of Denver’s strategy said. The key, according to the person, would be involving a third team to convert Harris into something the Nuggets would view as “decent replacement value” for Anthony.

That is where another team equipped with attractive assets could enter the picture, multiple sources said: the Philadelphia 76ers. New team president Rod Thorn and GM Ed Stefanski – who formerly worked together in New Jersey – could be central to constructing a deal that would compel the Nuggets to move Anthony rather than endure a season-long distraction that ends with Anthony leaving as a free agent after the season. The key pieces of the Philadelphia equation would be the expiring contracts of Jason Kapono ($6.64 million) and Willie Green ($3.98 million), a young talent such as Thaddeus Young, and Andre Iguodala, who is coming off a solid contribution to Team USA’s gold-medal performance at the FIBA World Championships. Some executives believe the Sixers would at least discuss including No. 2 overall pick Evan Turner if it meant getting Anthony, but that would defeat the purpose of going over the luxury tax to get Anthony in the first place.

Amaro: Prospects from Lee deal “have long way to go”

With the Phillies playing so well and taking a two game NL East lead into today’s action, it’s hard to imagine much bad news coming from the mouth of GM Ruben Amaro Jr.

But Amaro confirmed what many fans were already suspecting: The prospects gained from Seattle in the Cliff Lee trade are not exactly impressing and are a long way from being major-league ready.

Bellow is an excerpt from Philly.com.

This much, Ruben Amaro Jr. stressed: The three prospects the Phillies acquired in an off-season trade with Seattle for Cliff Lee are young. The general manager said his staff understood that at the time of the deal. Plenty of development was still needed.

With that said, the first year in the Phillies’ system has not been kind to Phillippe Aumont, Tyson Gillies, and J.C. Ramirez.

The latest blow came Thursday, when Ramirez, a righthander, underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum (cartilage) in his hip. The Phillies say Ramirez should be ready by spring training.

Nonetheless, it marks another setback in a series of them for the three high-profile prospects.

“We have a long way to go on them,” Amaro said. “We still view them as strong prospects for us. We’ll see how they develop.”

Here is a look at some of  the numbers of the three acquisitions:

Ramirez – 24 starts, 4.84 ERA, 115 strikeouts.

Aumont – 27 games, 21 starts, 5.68 ERA, 129 hits in 122 innings

Gilles – 28 games, one cocaine possession charge

Of coarse of the Phillies go out and win a World Series it will be hard for even the most cynical fan to find a problem with anything Amaro has done. If not? Well get used to hearing to these three names.

Kolb, Bradley fail concussion tests

Kevin Kolb failed his concussion test on Wednesday making it look increasingly likely that Michael Vick will get the start at QB this Sunday at Detroit.

ESPN has a full report here:

Philadelphia quarterback Kevin Kolb and linebacker Stewart Bradley did not pass concussion testing Wednesday. Coach Andy Reid, however, said both players have “made progress” since Monday.

Reid said quarterback Michael Vick will run the offense in practice Wednesday and Thursday and “we’ll take Friday as it comes.”

Reid had said Monday that both Kolb and Bradley would not practice before Friday. However, Reid did not rule out either player for Sunday’s game at Detroit.

Bradley sustained a concussion when he collided with Ernie Sims during Philadelphia’s 27-20 loss to Green Bay on Sunday. Yet somehow, the Eagles’ middle linebacker returned for a few plays before he was pulled for the rest of the game.

Again with the Eagles already facing heat regarding the way they initially handled Bradley’s concussion on Sunday, I would be very surprised to see either player activated against the Lions.

Reflections on Eagles Week 1 loss

Now that the Eagles opener against the Green Bay Packers has come and gone it’s time to reflect on what was Sunday and what could be in the future. The Eagles did a few things right and a few more things wrong in a 27-20 loss that leaves the team still searching for answers at several key positions.

Kolb struggles: After starting his career with back-to-back 300-yard passing games last season expectations were high for Kevin Kolb — maybe a little too high. Like many young quarterbacks, Kolb had his struggles on Sunday, passing for just 24 yards after having his day come to an end before halftime due to a concussion. Injury aside, Kolb looked shaky on his first game since Donovan McNabb was traded to the Redskins, going 5-for-10 and finishing with a QB rating of 56.2. The Eagles are saying there is a chance the Kolb could play this Sunday against Detroit, but with the NFL now more cautious about head injuries I would be surprised to see him active.

Vick Impresses: Sure it was against a defense that wasn’t expecting to see him for more than a few gadget plays, but it is undeniable that Vick sparked the Eagles offense. For all of the criticism that Vick has taken since arriving in Philadelphia last preseason — and rightly so — he reminded fans why he was a three-time pro bowler at the position.

With the offensive line struggling, Vick improvised his way to 103 yard rushing on 11 attempts. He also was quite accurate with the football, finishing 16-for-24 for 175 yards. No matter what way you shake it, 275 total yards for a QB in just over half of a football game is a great day.

We may also get to find out what Vick can do against a defense that game plans for him this week if Kolb can’t go.

Still no running game: I’m not sure how the Eagles are going to find out what they have in LeSean McCoy if they don’t give him an opportunity to run the football. McCoy got just seven carries on Sunday. He did factor in the passing game, as expected, with six catches and 47 yards, but the Eagles looked very one dimensional, especially in the first half. Reid has never been one to focus on the run, but for a team in transition finding out if McCoy is the right guy for the job should be a priority. It would be nice to see what McCoy could do with 15-plus carries but that doesn’t seem like a reality with this coaching staff in place.

Defensive aggression: Don’t let the fact that the Packers score 27 points fool you; the Eagles defense played well Sunday. The Bird racked up three sacks and pressured Aaron Rodgers early and often. Had the offense done a little more with the football the defense may not have worn down in the second half. I liked what I saw in terms of blitzes in this game and it was good to see Juqua Parker make a couple of big plays.

The Packers are expected to be one of the best offensive teams in the league so it is hard to scrutinize this unit too much. Holding Rodgers to 188 yards passing is something many defenses would be envious of.

Detroit will be no walk in the park: Do I expect the Eagles to win on Sunday? Yes. Do I think it will be easy? No.

The Lions look much improved from their two win 2009-10 season and would have beat the Bears if not for a controversial late call on what have been a game-winning touchdown catch by Calvin Johnson before the ball came lose from his hand on the way down.

Even if Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford can not go, which looks very likely given his shoulder injury, I don’t expect the Lions to go down easy. This will be the team’s home opener and the team is sure to be fuming after the way Sunday’s game ended.

The good news for the Eagles is that Detroit still looks very vulnerable through the air as Jay Cutler torched the Lions’ secondary for 372 yards. If Cutler can do that with only one interception, Vick or Kolb should be able to do the same.

Look for the Lions to hang in the game, but an aggressive Eagles defense to take advantage of backup QB Sean Hill and put this one away in the second half.

Overall: The Eagles have the look of a .500 squad right now. They have some pieces to be a plyoff contender but with question marks at key positions a lot will have to go right for that to happen.

Beating Detroit would be a good start.

Eagles add to OL, cut 10 players

On a day where the Eagles trimmed their roster it was an addition that is grabbing headlines. The Birds plugged a hole today when they traded an undisclosed draft pick to the Arizona Cardinals for offensive lineman Reggie Wells.

Wells (29) started all 16 regular-season and both playoff games for the Cardinals last season. During his seven years with Arizona, he started all 16 regular-season games in six out of seven seasons, losing the final half of 2005 to a broken ankle. Since then, he’s started 70 consecutive games. Seventy-eight of his 104 career starts, were at left guard.

Wells will be inserted into the starting lineup in place of Stacey Andrews, who has been a major bust since signing a six-year $38 millions contract last season. Andrews likely will be kept on for depth, meaning ax-Jean Gilles, Fenuki Tupou and King Dunlap are all in increased jeopardy of making the final roster.

In other roster moves, the Eagles placed DE Victor Abiamiri on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, which means the fourth-year defensive end is not eligible to play in the team’s first six regular-season games.

Cut on Friday were: RB J.J. Arrington, WR Dobson Collins, DE Pannel Egboh, TE Nate Lawrie, RB Martell Mallett, T Jeraill McCuller, CB David Pender, CB Geoff Pope, DT Boo Robinson and S Anthony Scirrotto.

The roster now stands at 65 players meaning the team has until tomorrow to cut the final 12 members.
