Eagles should pound Bucs – Should

Don’t let the perception that a win over Tampa Bay will mean little for the Philadelphia Eagles.

It is a game like today’s that will tell us a ton about the Eagles.

On the surface the Birds’ contest against the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers is as lopsided as you can get. The Bucs haven’t been able to stop the run or pass and their offense is relying on an unknown quarterback in Josh Johnson.

The Eagles, meanwhile, have Donovan McNabb back in the saddle and Brian Westbrook ready to run, no matter how limited.

But Eagles fans have seen this before. Last year there was the 13-13 tie with the then-hapless Bengals. In 2007, there was a 19-16 home loss to the Bears, who went on to finish 7-9. In 2006, the Eagles fell to a Tampa team hat didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard in a 4-12 season. The pattern is clear: Each season the Eagles have lost to a team that they are far superior to. Whether it has been a case of the team looking ahead or simply coming out with no energy, the Eagles have disappointed their fan base in games just like today’s.

I don’t thin the Eagles will lose today, in fact I don’t see anyway they do. Then again, I felt the same way going into those aforementioned contests.

The Eagles had no problem taking care of a bad Kansas City team, but that was under different circumstances. Kevin Kolb and LeSean McCoy were starting and no one was quit sure what to expected from the team going in. This week, the expectation is to blow out Tampa. If they do, the win will look like nothing more than a victory over an easy team. But don’t be fooled, that is exactly what the Birds need to show that they are not the team Eagles’ fans have seen in the past let bad teams stay in games and let bad teams steal wins.

That shouldn’t happen today. And if it doesn’t, it will be another sign that the Eagles grand expectations this season are warranted.
