At even-strength Flyers pound Sabres
November 6th, 2009 by Eric Schwartz
Fans that have followed the Flyers over the past few seasons know that the team has no problem scoring power play goals. Last season, the team even excelled in short-handed play.
Five-on-five had been a different story entirely.
That’s what makes Friday night’s 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres so encouraging for Flyers fans. The Sabres entered the night not only as the leaders of the Northeast division, but the NHL leader in plus/minus rating in five-on-five play. However on Friday night it was the Fylers who dominated even strength play. The men in orange and black scored four even strength goals and added another goal a man down late in the third when the Sabres pulled goalie Ryan Miller out of desperation.
Daniel Carcillo led the way with two goals – and a punishing check. Philadelphia also got goals from Chris Pronger and James Van Riemsdyk, each registering their third of the season. Darroll Powe added his fourth of the year.
The win was a promising one for a Flyers team that has won three straight and hosts St. Louis tonight.
Time will tell if the Flyers can keep up the five-on-five success, but Friday night was certainly a promising sign.
