Here’s Hoping For ALCS Game 7

When the Yankees put up six runs to take the lead against the Angels on Thursday I really thought it was game, set and match for the Yankees.   With their bullpen and the momentum I figured they’d close it out and both they and the Phillies would have significant rest to start the World Series this Wednesday.   Funny thing happened on the way to the clinching celebration – nobody told the Angels they were done, and they took the lead back 7-6 and somehow managed to hold on to force Game 6 and send the series back to New York.  Mother Nature took care of Game 6, forcing it to be played instead tonight.

Even if the Yankees win tonight, they will only  have two days rest before starting on Wednesday and if they have to empty the bullpen to win they won’t be at full strength by Wednesday.  The better scenario is for the Angels to win tonight and force Game 7 tomorrow night at which time conventional wisdom has the aces of both teams John Lackey of the Angels and CC Sabathia of the Yankees going head to head to decide the pennant.

If Game 7 takes place, regardless of who wins neither Mike Scioscia or Joe Girardi will be able to set their rotations the way they’d like and if the game goes extra innings, both teams will have depleted bullpens on one days rest to face what will be a well rested Phillies team and neither Lackey or Sabathia would be able to pitch three times in the World Series, meaning the Phillies would be opening at a minimum against their number two starter.

So let’s settle in tonight and watch the game and root for those Angels.  I’ll take any advantage we can get to give the Phillies the best shot at two in a row!!

Perhaps no one told the Angels they were done back in Anaheim, but the Yankees sure told them last night in Game 6.

Whether they needed to go to Game 7 or not, the Bombers would have been ready to go on Wednesday. They are hot right now and have been for most of the season. Once ARod was back on the field and CC joined the ranks, there has been no stopping them.

Sabathia will be the Game 1 starter and Girardi is looking for Burnett and Pettitte to follow. That means, CC will be available for Games 4 and 7 if necessary. He’s proved over and over what he can do on just 3 days rest. Besides, this is the postseason… EVERYONE should be ready and able to go on short rest.

So, too bad for you that the Yankees don’t hand out advantages. The Phillies will have to win the Series based solely on skill. That might not be a good thing for Philly fans though. Manuel has announced that Lee will start Game 1. Okay, but who is he looking at for 2 and 3? Still at this late hour, he hasn’t made a decision. Why? Perhaps because the rest of the Philly rotation is unsettled at best. If the Series comes down to pitching (which it always does) then the Yankees have the Phillies beat by a mile.

Don’t get me wrong, the Phillies are a good team… but after all, they are in the National League and the American League is where it’s at.

    May the best team win.
    See you on the field.

Got something to say?
