Ruiz Walks Off in Style

The Phillies were on the winning side of a pitching duel Tuesday, when they faced St. Louis. Both starting pitchers went 8.0 innings allowing only 1 run, and sending the game into extra innings. Cole Hamels had arguably his best outing of the season striking out eight,  and setting Philadelphia up for a win in walk off fashion. The lefty threw 116 pitches and brought his ERA to 4.42.

Carlos Ruiz was the star on offense for the Philadelphia. The catcher decided to take things into his own hands connecting for a solo home run off Blake Hawksworth in the bottom of the 10th. Ruiz was the only Phillie to record more than one hit as he went 2-3, including a double, and recorded 2 RBI’s.

Brad Lidge and Jose Contreras also contributed from the mound. Lidge pitched the 9th, allowing no hits and striking out one, while Contreras followed in the 10th recording two strikeouts and allowing one hit, earning the win.

Philadelphia’s pitchers looked sharp against the Cardinals, including Albert Pujols. The slugger was 1-for-5 with a strikeout, while the Cardinals as a team were 9-of-38.

Adam Wainwright had a great effort for St. Louis which turned out to be for not. The right hander struck out six Phillies and allowing only four hits, to move his ERA to 1.96.

The series continues tomorrow when Brady Penny and Kyle Kendrick face-off at Citizens Bank Park.
