Eagles sign Marlin Jackson
by Eric Schwartz
The Eagles secondary now has a new member.
Philadelphiaeagles.com is reporting that the Eagles have signed cornerback Marlin Jackson to a two-year contract. Terms have not been released.
A report from profootballtalk.com says that it is believed the Eagles will convert Jackson to free safety — an area the Birds had all kinds of trouble with last season.
Jackson played both cornerback and safety in his five seasons with the Colts, but is coming off of a season where he played just five games due to a knee injury. He has missed 22 games over the last two seasons due to ACL injuries on both knees. That was likely the reason the Colts declined the option to tender him when they had the chance.
Jackson told philadelphiaeagles.com that he is ahead of schedule and will be ready to go in full by the start of training camp.
For his career, Jackson has made 32 starts in 56 games with 306 tackles, and four interceptions. He is most remembered for his performance in the 2006 AFC Championship where his interception of Tom Brady with 24 seconds left sealed the win for the Colts.
While signing a player coming off of a knee injury is always a risk, if healthy Jackson will at the very least provide competition in the secondary. His ability to play multiple positions will make him a favorite of defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.
It is hard to make too much of this move right now as the Eagles are sure to address the safety position in April’s draft.
