Simon Gagne’s sweet goal gives Flyers sweep
by Eric Schwartz
For the second-straight game the Philadelphia Flyers spotted the New Jersey Devils a 2-0 lead.
For the second-straight game the Flyers came back to win 3-2.
Simon Gagne broke his 12-game goalless skid with a beautiful goal in overtime to give the Flyers a home-and-home sweep of the rival Devils on Wednesday. The win helped the Flyers keep themselves in playoff position in the clustered bottom half of the Eastern Conference playoff race. They currently are tied for seventh place with Tampa Bay with 63 points. The Bruins sit in ninth with 61, while the Rangers, Thrashers, Panthers and Islanders have all slipped down the charts.
As great as the team’s home-and-home sweep of the Devils was the Flyers will have to duplicate the feat if they wish to move up the standings. Up next is a pair of games with the Canadians, who sit just one point ahead of them in sixth place. With the winter break to follow the Flyers have a chance to go into their time off with a host of momentum and little separation in the standings.
With as hot and cold as this team has been, nothing can be taken for granted.
The Canadians will enter the series knowing all about comeback wins. Also on Wednesday, the Habs erased a 5-2 third-period deficit in a 6-5 overtime win over the Capitals, snapping Washington’s win streak at 14.
No lead will be safe when these teams meet on Friday, which will be hell for the coaches.
But it sure should be fun for the fans.
