Sir Elton performs at the Wachovia Center

Who was that guy wearing No. 42 last night? The guy was unreal. He poured in 19 points to go with 11 rebounds, six blocks and four steals. The guy even had the big defensive play, swatting away an inbound pass in the final seconds to lead the Sixers to an 86-84 win over the Bobcats.

The name on the uniform said Brand, but could it have really been? And will he be back?

Brand’s performance on Wednesday night gave Sixers fans something they haven’t had all season – hope.

While beating the Bobcats in the final seconds (Lou Williams hit a layup with 3.1 ticks left.) is nothing to write home about, a sign of life from Brand is. He finished with season highs in points, rebounds and blocks, and finally got playing time in the fourth quarter, logging 41 minutes total.

Even with Marreese Speights out for 6-8 weeks there was some question as to how much playing time Brand would get. Wednesday he proved he deserved it. After the game, Brand said tat his best is yet to come.

“That’s not my best,” Brand was quoted as saying. “I’ve still got a lot better games ahead of me. I still feel like I missed some easy shots.”

The Sixers sure hope so.

The team still looks lost defensively at times and struggles to guard the three, but if Brand can get going that will at least solve the problem of not having a low post scorer. Its baby steps with this team.

Allen Iverson isn’t coming back to Philly, but maybe – just maybe – the old Elton Brand is.
