Sixers’ GM: Iverson not coming back to Philly thumbnail

I will give Sixers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski one thing: He is honest. Actually, I’ll give him two things — he doesn’t hide even when he makes a mess.
Stefanski was a guest on the Mike Missanelli show this afternoon and set a few thing straight. The Sixers became a hot topic (well as hot a topic as they can be with the cast they have) on talk radio today as both 610 and 97.5 were flooded with calls an opinions on whether the Sixers should go after recently released Allen Iverson. Stefanski came on to address that rumor as well as several others. Here is a brief recap:

— Stefanski said that the team will not pursue Iverson, siting the team’s desire for Lou Williams and Jrue Holiday to continue to get playing time. He said that Iverson would not be a good fit with the team’s style and that from what he has heard, brining in Iverson would not help the team sell more tickets.

— He said that he is aware of the attendance problems and said that the only way to address that in this city of to get wins on the board.

— He said it is still to early to judge the play of Elton Brand. With Brand missing so much time to injury last season, his true talents have yet to be seen. He also admitted that he does not know if Brand is on the south side of his career or if he will ever regain the form that made him and All-Pro.

— Stefanski said that Samuel Dalembert’s agent is actively seeking a trade partner for the Sixers’ center. He added that while there has been talks nothing has got to the point that he would consider “hot.”

— Finally Stefanski made it clear that the Sixers would not have been able to acquire big man Josh Johnson last offseason. It is well known that the Sixers first to options at power forward were Johnson and Brand and that Johnson has played far better to this point (leads the Hawks with 23 ppg.) He said that he was 100 percent sure that whatever contract the Sixers offered Johnson would have been matched by the Hawks, keeping him in Atlanta.
